A Living Tradition Instituted by Nadia's Royal Dynasty
The worship of Devi Jagadhatri in Bengal was inaugurated in 1762 AD by Maharaja Krishnachandra Ray of Krishnanagar Rajbari. Legend narrates that the Maharaja was unjustly imprisoned by the Nawab for delayed tributes and missed the annual Durga Puja. In his sorrow, Maa Jagadhatri manifested before him in a divine vision, ordaining him to perform her worship on Kartik Shukla Navami.
Upon his triumphant release, the Maharaja consecrated the deity in the Krishnanagar Rajbari with royal pomp. Soon, the fervor spread into the historic barowaris of Chasapara (Buri Maa), College Street (Choto Maa), and Bagha Jatin (Mejo Maa), making Krishnagar the spiritual epicentre of Jagadhatri Puja worldwide.

Maa Buri Maa is the supreme crowned deity of Krishnagar. She is adorned with over 30 kg of pure gold ornaments, an iconic golden crown (Sonar Mukut), and hundreds of kilograms of silver jewellery offered by millions of devotees. Millions gather for Her Mahaprasad and She is traditionally the grand final idol in Krishnagar's world-famous immersion procession.
